In the Bible, Leviticus is the third book of the law of Moses; but it is written or presented as direct revelation more than the other books of the Pentateuch are. The bulk of the book consists of divine speeches that Moses delivered to the people (Hartley, xxx). This emphasis is introduced with the very first word of the book, wayyiqrāʾ (“and he called”), which also serves as the Hebrew title of the book.
